Bell Red Saunders Band around 1954 ~ 1955 William Bell won a talent contest at Memphis' annual Mid-South fair. The first prize was $500.00 and a trip to Chicago to sing at Club Delisa for a weekend with The Red Saunders Band. It was Red Saunders who recommended William Bell to Phineas Newborn. The Phineas Newborn Band (members William Bell, ........................) was a member of the band on and off for the next five years while at the same time being a member of The Del-Rios. When he came back from training, he cut as much material as he could in two weeks, which was then released as singles. Stax had enough material stock-piled that they could release everything as an album "The Soul Of A Bell".
